Admission to the French Grandes Ecoles

The Grandes Ecoles, at the highest level of French higher education, represent a specificity of the educational system which is not very much known abroad. They are very selective and prestigious schools of higher education.

These institutions some of which are linked to universities, exist in the engineering, agricultural, applied and physical sciences, the humanities, the social sciences, management, and so on.

Students usually enrol after the competitive entrance examination. The enrolment concerns those French students who have consistently obtained the highest grades throughout the last few years of their secondary studies.

There are mor than 240 institutions accredited by the Ministry of Higher Education and Research, which are authorized to deliver the diplôme national d’ingénieur.

Basic requirements for admission to preparatory classes for the Grandes Ecoles

The preparation for the competitive entrance examination may be given in French high schools or in specialized private institutions. The classes in which this preparation is offered are called classes préparatoires.

The basic diploma which is required in order to be admissible for preparatory classes leading to admission in a Grande Ecole is the baccalauréat général which is obtained after 7 years of secondary studies. The high school

student will have chosen one of the three academic cirricular within the baccalauréat général: a scientific curriculum, a literary curriculum or an economics and social sciences curriculum.

The competitive entrance examination and its preparation

The admission to each Grande Ecole is strictly limited annually by the Board of each institution in connection with the Ministry of Higher Education and Research and the sponsoring ministries.

This competitive entrance examination requires intensive preparatory work. A student seeking entrance to one of these schools may complete the work in two years. But three years is not unusual for preparation of the exam after completion of the baccalauréat général.

It is important to note that the academic quality of these classes préparatoires is of the highest level. They are renowned for the intense amount of work expected from their students as well as for the severity of their grading system which is based on a scale of 0 to 20.

They are usually several Grandes Ecoles specializing in the same fields of studies. Access to the majority of these schools is extremely difficult. The competition is very severe while the study curriculum is vast and the level of instruction high.

Duration of studies and career openings

The usual duration of studies in the Grandes Ecoles, like ISAE-ENSMA, is 3 years (after the two years of classes préparatoires), including several internships in companies amounting to a total of at least six months (at ISAE-ENSMA the average duration of internship periods is 10 months).

The teaching in the Grandes Ecoles is of a very high level and is directed towards the preparation of a professional career. This teaching is more based on a theoretical and more general approach. For instance, at ISAE-ENSMA, the students are trained in aeronautics, transport, mechanics and energy. The training is said to be “polytechnical” though students are able to choose “major subjects” during the last year of their attendance at the school (i.e. aerodynamics, energetics, heat transfer, structures, materials, computer science and avionics).

In all the professional sectors of the French economy, employers often show a tendency to give preference to graduates of the Grandes Ecoles over graduates from the French universities.

Careful ! It is important to select just one year of study to make your study program. For third-year courses, it is important to select only one specialization among: Aerodynamics, Heat transfer, Energetics, Structures, Materials and Computer Science and Avionics.

ECTS credit system (European Credits Transfer System)

The ECTS, which is part of the European Union educational program Erasmus +, was developed by the European Community in order to provide common procedures to guarantee academic recognition throughout the European Community.

It provides a way of measuring and comparing learning achievements, and transferring them from one institution to another. The ECTS system is based on the principle of mutual trust and confidence between the participating of higher education institutions.

ECTS is a credit system based on student workload required to complete them. They reflect the quantity of work each course requires in relation to the total quantity of work required to complete a full wear of academic study at the institution.

ECTS credits are allocated to courses and are awarded to students who successfully complete those courses by passing the examinations or other assessment.

BRAFITEC Program – 2010-2011

The BRAFITEC program gave me social and academic experiences. The contact with the teachers and researchers from ISAE-ENSMA and the students have strongly facilitated my adaptation to the French culture. The academic program through the BRAFITEC cooperation has allowed me to complete my training and gave me an access to the research areas I was interested by. It also offered me different opportunities necessary for the evolution of my professional project. My contacts in Poitiers allowed me to improve my knowledge by carrying out a project in a research laboratory, which oriented me towards a PhD program that I have started after my graduation in Brazil.

A experiência BRAFITEC me proporcionou uma evolução tanto no âmbito social como acadêmico. O contato com diferentes profissionais e estudantes da ISAE-ENSMA facilitou consideravelmente minha adaptação à cultura francesa. Os compromissos escolares estabelecidos pelo acordo BRAFITEC permitiram completar minha formação além de possibilitar o acesso aos domínios de pesquisa nos quais estava destinado a seguir. Diferentes oportunidades necessárias à evolução do meu projeto profissional também foram frutos do ambiente criado na instituição: inicialmente realizei um estágio em um dos laboratórios da escola que possibilitou o início da minha tese de doutorado, iniciada após a obtenção do meu diploma no Brasil.

Erasmus Program – 2013-2014

My stay at ISAE-ENSMA, as an Erasmus student, has always been a more than positive experience. I came to this Engineering School to carry out an Internship-Final Year Project at the PPrime Institute (which shares a partnership with ISAE-ENSMA) and, since the beginning, I have been able to perceive the value of this experience, not only in the academic and professional context, but in the cultural and language improvement context as well.

This program has allowed me to work on an interesting project, in close contact with the research and industrial fields, and also to meet a group of professionals always willing to contribute to my training; all of that in a friendly atmosphere.

Moreover, the ISAE-ENSMA has offered me the opportunity to participate in the student life by means of many sports and cultural activities with the students of this school, distinguished by their companionship and willingness to create a good ambiance.

Mi estancia en ISAE-ENSMA, como estudiante Erasmus, ha sido siempre una experiencia más que positiva. Vine a esta escuela de ingeniería para realizar unas Prácticas-Proyecto de Fin de Estudios en el Instituto PPrime (asociado a ISAE-ENSMA) y desde el principio he podido apreciar el valor de esta experiencia de intercambio no solo a nivel académico y profesional, sino también a nivel cultural y de aprendizaje de la lengua.

Este programa me ha permitido trabajar en un proyecto interesante, en contacto con la investigación y la industria, así como conocer a profesionales siempre dispuestos a contribuir a mi formación; todo ello en un ambiente de trabajo muy agradable.

Además ISAE-ENSMA me ha ofrecido la oportunidad de participar en la vida de estudiante en numerosas actividades deportivas y culturales con los alumnos de esta escuela, que destacan por su compañerismo y afán de crear un buen ambiente.

Double degree program (CAUC) – 2012-2014

Thanks to the agreement between my university (CAUC, Tianjin) and the 3 schools of aeronautics in France (ISAE, ISAE-ENSMA and ENAC); I have followed the same training as in France. After 1 year of French intensive courses, 2 years of preparatory classes and 2 years of engineering training in aeronautics, I have decided to apply for a double degree program at ISAE-ENSMA. As I am very interested by propulsion and energetics, and as ISAE-ENSMA is a reference in these areas, come and study at ISAE-ENSMA was a natural choice.

My first days at ISAE-ENSMA were quite difficult. Even if I have followed the same educative system in China, at first, it was not easy for me to understand the teachers and I talked a lot with them after class. As all the teachers are friendly, I have slowly made progress. After 1 year of studies, I’ve had no problem to understand French and I successfully achieved my first year of studies.

Thanks to a professor, I have carried out my junior engineer training within a company manufacturing sport aircrafts in Naples, Italy. Thanks to the real good technical training of the 2nd year of studies, my internship has gone well and my supervisor has appreciated my work.

In third year of studies, I have chosen the major “energetics” to deepen my technical knowledge and finally I have found a graduation project at Renault Sport. I think that the school offered me a broadly-based training that answers to the needs of the companies. Thanks to this great training, I am able to work both in a team and independently.

My stay at ISAE-ENSMA is a good memory. This prestigious school, recognized by companies, is a great springboard for my professional career.
