Laboratories

Close links between research laboratories, teaching departments and companies mean that engineering students benefit from a dynamic training that anticipates the evolution of concepts and techniques in mechanics and energy.

The two laboratories attached to ISAE-ENSMA are the P’ Institute and the LIAS. On January 1, 2022, the school has 141 permanent staff. This corresponds to 49 teacher-researchers from ISAE-ENSMA, 29 from the University of Poitiers, 18 CNRS researchers, and 45 technical staff (27 ISAE-ENSMA and 18 CNRS) assigned to the laboratories. If we add PhD students (104) and contract staff (7), the total number of employees exceeds 250. Approximately half of the researchers and teacher-researchers at ISAE-ENSMA hold the “Habilitation à Diriger les Recherches” (Habilitation to Supervise Research).

Technical and administrative staff have a dual teaching and research mission within the school. The technical staff work on both experimental research facilities and practical work set-ups. The administrative staff provide secretarial and accounting services for ISAE-ENSMA’s research teams and teaching departments.

Created on 1 January 2012, the P’ Institute is a CNRS UPR under agreement with ISAE-ENSMA and the University of Poitiers. Primarily linked to the Engineering Sciences sectors – especially for activities developed at the school – it is positioned as a European-level research center of excellence for transport, energy and the environment, on areas of expertise in mechanics (solids and fluids), materials and energy. A recognized French cluster in the field of engineering sciences, it gathers 632 people (as of 1/06/2023), including 306 permanent staff (169 teacher-researchers, 33 CNRS researchers, 104 ITA and BIATSS), 3 associate professor-researchers (PAST/CDD), 221 doctoral and post-doctoral students, 22 contract technical staff and 80 interns.

Covering an area of 38,000 m² – of which 21,000 m² for the University of Poitiers and 17,000 m² for ISAE-ENSMA – the Institute is organized into 3 departments: Physics and Mechanics of Materials (PMM); Fluid, Thermal and Combustion (FTC); Mechanical Engineering and Complex Systems (GMSC).

ISAE-ENSMA is particularly involved in Department PMM (damage and durability of metallic materials and composites) and Department FTC (aerodynamics, turbulence, control, optimization of flows and exchanges, convection and coupled transfers, thermal systems, turbulent and heterogeneous combustion, propulsion, detonation). Taking into account doctoral students and other contract staff, ISAE-ENSMA hosts around 220 people attached to P’, i.e. 40% of the Institute’s total workforce (excluding trainees).

Laboratory of Computer Science and Automatic Control for Systems

Created on January 1, 2012, LIAS is a Research Unit of ISAE-ENSMA and the University of Poitiers. It has a staff of 93 (as at 1/06/2023), including 38 teacher-researchers and 30 PhD students. The laboratory is located on two sites, with roughly equivalent staff numbers: Poitiers (ENSIP) and Futuroscope (ISAE-ENSMA). The unit draws on complementary skills in computer science and automatic control, with applications in the ICST fields of engineering, transport, energy and the environment. It is organized around three themes: Data and Model Engineering; Real-time Embedded Systems; Automation and Systems.

ISAE-ENSMA is particularly involved in the first two areas (database integration and optimization, modeling of complex systems, scheduling, design and dimensioning of real-time systems), with specific applications in the fields of transport, energy and the environment. The team is composed of 8 ISAE-ENSMA teacher-researchers, 10 teacher-researchers from the University of Poitiers and 2 BIATSS staff.
